Autumn Mini Session at Fenham Carr with the Suddell Family

A tender moment with the Suddell Family at my autumn mini sessions, Fenham Carr.

There’s something about autumn that feels like a deep breath before winter arrives.

The rush of summer holidays has passed, school routines are settling into place, and the world seems to slow down just enough for us to notice the little things again. The crunch of leaves beneath tiny boots, rosy cheeks after an afternoon outdoors, warm knits, muddy adventures and those fleeting moments of togetherness that often get lost in the busyness of family life.

That’s exactly what I loved about photographing the Suddell family at Fenham Carr.

The woodland was beginning to transform, with rich copper tones creeping through the trees and a blanket of fallen leaves underfoot. Rather than focusing on perfectly posed smiles, we spent our time exploring, cuddling close and embracing the season.

One of my favourite images from the session is a beautifully tender moment between mum, dad and their daughter. Nestled between them, she is wrapped up in their love and attention, completely unaware of the camera. It's the kind of photograph that tells a story years from now — not just what everyone looked like, but how it felt to be together.

Another image captures a quieter moment. Sitting thoughtfully amongst the autumn leaves, she pauses for a second before heading back off on her adventure. Childhood is full of these tiny in-between moments, and they are often the ones parents treasure most when they look back.

Why Autumn is My Favourite Season to Photograph

If you've followed my work for a while, you'll know that autumn holds a special place in my heart.

🍂 The colours are simply magical. Warm oranges, deep reds and golden browns create the most beautiful natural backdrop.

🍂 The light is softer and more flattering. Gone is the harsh midday summer sun, replaced with gentle golden tones that photograph beautifully.

🍂 Families naturally snuggle closer together when the weather cools, creating authentic moments of connection.

🍂 Layers, knitwear, boots and cosy textures add so much warmth and character to photographs.

🍂 And perhaps most importantly, autumn carries a feeling of nostalgia. It reminds us that time moves quickly, making it the perfect season to pause and document this chapter of family life.

Capturing the Beauty of Ordinary Moments

The thing I loved most about the Suddell family's session wasn't the location or the beautiful autumn colours.

It was the connection between them.

The way their daughter instinctively leaned into her parents. The giggles shared between cuddles. The small moments that might seem ordinary now but will become priceless memories in years to come.

These are the moments I hope every family can hold onto.
