What to Wear for Your Family or Motherhood Session (My Gentle Guide)
A golden hour maternity session with Emily at Half Moon Bay
One of the questions I hear most from families and mothers before a photo session is: “What should we wear?” And it’s completely normal to feel unsure! Your clothing can feel like a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
Here’s my gentle guide to help you plan your outfits for a family or motherhood session, whether it’s a Motherhood Mini at Half Moon Bay, a cozy home session, or an outdoor family shoot.

1. Choose Timeless, Neutral Colours
Soft, neutral tones—think cream, beige, soft grey, muted pastels—look beautiful on camera and don’t distract from the emotion of your images. Avoid overly bright colours or busy patterns, as these can take attention away from the connection between you and your loved ones.

2. Keep It Comfortable
Your clothing should allow you to move, sit, walk, and cuddle without restriction. Dresses that flow, soft knits, or relaxed trousers work wonderfully. Kids in clothes they can move in naturally will also feel happier and more playful during the session, giving you authentic, joyful images.

3. Layer for Texture and Depth
Adding layers—like a cardigan, scarf, or denim jacket—creates visual interest and adds depth to your photos. Textures like knits, linen, or soft cotton photograph beautifully and feel effortless.

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
It’s lovely when families coordinate without being too “matchy-matchy.” Pick a colour palette of 2–3 complementary shades and allow each family member to express their own style within that palette. This creates a harmonious, natural look.
5. Think About Location
If your session is outdoors, like the windswept beaches of Half Moon Bay, consider the surroundings. Earthy, neutral tones work beautifully against sand, water, and sky, while soft pastels pop subtly without overwhelming the natural scene.

6. Avoid Logos and Distracting Graphics
Your images should be timeless, not tied to a trend or brand. Avoid big logos, bold slogans, or distracting prints that could date your photos.
7. Accessorize Thoughtfully
Simple accessories—delicate necklaces, cosy hats, or little shoes—can add charm and personality without stealing focus.
The Takeaway:
Your outfits should feel like you. When you’re comfortable, confident, and relaxed, it shows in every photograph. Together, we can capture your family’s authentic connection and the tender moments that matter most.
